Marathi movies on politics6/19/2023 Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray recently made a dig at the Congress as he said, “We don’t change colours when the circumstances change. But, now it’s the government’s time to answer some awkward questions. The Congress has in the past - 2009 Assembly and Lok Sabha elections - cleverly promoted the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) to split the Sena’s Marathi votes. Nehru had even gone a step further and announced Centre’ rule in Mumbai, which he had to roll back due to an unprecedented backlash from the masses. It is no secret that top Congress leaders, including then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and home minister Sardar Vallabhai Patel, were opposed to the merger of Mumbai in Maharashtra. This time around, the Congress’ policy decision appears to be a strategic ploy to counter history. Earlier too, there has been a separate office set up at Mantralaya to look into issues related to Marathi, but the idea hasn’t made any headway. Chavan will himself head the department so as to keep it functional. Surprisingly, even the Congress and NCP could not come together to mark the celebrations.Ĭhief minister Ashok Chavan has decided to constitute a separate ministry for Marathi to address all issues related to the language. On Saturday, Congress, NCP, Shiv Sena and MNS engaged in a political one-upmanship, trying to mobilise supporters to show they were the true custodians of Maharashtra.
